Cultural Regions of Somalia

There are three main regions: the coastal region including Mogadishu, the agricultural region in the south, and the nomadic or pastoral region. The majority of Somalis are camel, sheep, and goat herders, as well as cattle and horse breeders. Each season, men take the camels deep into the bush, while women and children keep the sheep and goats near water sources. The nomadic Somali-inhabited region includes territories in Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Kenya. There is a sedentary agricultural region between the Shabelle and Jubba rivers, where social organization is more based on land rights and less on ancestral lineage. Along the coast, from north of Mogadishu (Muqdisho) to the south, there are cities based on traditional maritime trade with Arabia, India, and others. These cities have ancient communities of Arab and Persian immigrants, as well as Somalis from across the country and beyond. These three major cultural regions have different dialects, further subdivided into others.
