Home PageChapter 33 - Days, Months, Dates

 1. DAYS OF THE WEEK:

Week in Somali is called USBUUC, WIIG, SITIMAAN, or TODDOBAAD!

The names of the days of the week in Somali are derived from Arabic numerals, except for JIMCE, which corresponds in Arabic to the Friday assembly.

There is some uncertainty about SABTI, which may be derived from the Italian SABATO or the Arabic numeral seven SAB'A!

 3. HOW TO READ A DATE:

Here is today's date:

In Somalia, the format dd/mm/yy is used, meaning "day/month/year", to read the date.

With today's date defined, the suffix -da is added to the number.
For example: 1da or kowda = the first day of the month; 2da or labada = the 2nd day of the month; 3da or saddaxda = the 3rd day of the month, and so on...

 4. MUSLIM CALENDAR MONTHS:

The Muslim calendar is widely used for religious matters, Muslim holidays, and even everyday life.

Arabic names of Muslim months are used, and there is no fixed correspondence between the Gregorian and Muslim calendars since the latter is a lunar calendar, with months of 29 or 30 days, leading to a growing gap of 10 days each year between the two calendars!
