In this chapter, all nouns with rare or irregular plurals are grouped together.


  Irregular plurals of nouns of Arabic origin 


Based on the examples, it appears that the singular has the final HL tone (moras), and the plural has the final H tone.


Singular Plural Translation
saxíib [-ka] asaxaáb [-ta] friend(s)
bunduq [-a] banaadiiq [-da] gun(s)
kúrsi [-ga] kuraasí [-/ta] chair(s)
macállin [-ka] macállimiín [-ta] teacher(s)
márkab [-ka] maraakíib [-ta] boat(s)
maxbùus [-ka] maxaabíis [-ta] prisonner(s)
sanduuq [-a] sanaadiiq [-da] box(es)
sargaal [-ka] saraakiil [-ta] officer(s)
taanbuug [-ga] tamaabuug [-ta] military tent(s)


They can also be found with regular endings:

  • kursi also has a Type 2 plural: kursiyo.

  • macállin also has a Type 2 plural: macallimo.

  • saxíib also has a Type 2 plural: saxiibbo.

  • taanbuug also has a Type 2 plural: taanbuugyo.


 Rare plurals 


* Addition of the suffix /-an/ or /-aan/ to form the plural.

Based on the examples given, it seems that the singular has a final HL tone (moras), and the plural has a final H tone.


Absolute Singular Absolute Plural Translation
úgax ugxáan egg(s)
dhágax dhagxán stone(s)
qálin qalmáan pen(s)


They can also be found with regular endings:

  • úgax also has a Type 3 plural: ugáxyo and a Type 5 plural: ugáx!

  • qálin also has a Type 3 plural: qalmo.
